Begin

poppy-1128683_1920.jpg

It’s all right
to hope and dream
for what seems impossible,
to wait for the moment
a sacred birth takes place.
The unimaginable happens,
a vision appears.
Suddenly you know
what you have to do,
and you begin
to breathe into
what is now possible.

May We All Be One

share-1411235_1920.jpg

Today I give great thanks and pray
that we may all be one,
one in mind, one in spirit.

In this delightful and dangerous time
I pray we may all be one,
one in spirit, one in heart,
one people of the land.

Today I give great thanks and pray,
may we all be one.
Beyond language, color and homeland,
may we speak of beauty and of pain.

Yes, may we all be one.
And may each song, story and sense of place
make us one again.

Only God Could Know

ducks-5041909_1920.jpg

God of the Cosmos,
source of love and life,
sprinkle your presence
generously across the azure sky.
Each new sacred moment
brings trimmings of wonder
to decorate the awesome vista.
Dance across the depths
and peer into unexpected places
that only God could know—
yes, crevices and depths
that only God could know.

A Dog’s Life

beagle-5375286_1920.jpg

Shelly stretches,
then reclines on the couch,
drifting it seems into a welcoming sleep.
As she sleeps with carefree solitude
in the hermitage,
unaware of the impeachment trial about to begin
and of the virus taking so many lives,
Shelly reminds me of what’s important.
There is beauty all around.

Genesis

milky-way-1023340_1920.jpg

One of the most profound insights for our planetary community is to see how the universe reveals itself as an unfolding evolutionary reality of holy mystery. Instead of seeing the universe as a concrete, solid system, we see it as a reality that moves our awareness into an embracing and dynamic process. We perceive and appreciate the sacred quality of the world unfolding before us. We see that life is deeply mysterious, a sacred presence, divinity itself. We realize that God is here among us and truly alive in each vibrant, beautiful moment, shivering with the exaltation of existence.

Listen and Pray

edits-2580664_1920.jpg

The world is a poem,
full of beauty, brokenness and soul.
Each day is a song of beauty,
a passage, a page, of all the stories
that I have yet to tell.
Radiant sunshine flows across the land,
bringing radiance,
pasturing hope.
Horizons of expectation
stretch across the vast azure sky,
stand tall and listen.
I hear each heart say,
“May the melodies of wonder
dance across the cosmos,
allowing each new moment
to gather, listen and pray.

Forgiveness

forgiveness-1767432_1920.jpg

What does it mean
to look back and pray
for forgiveness?
When at times we failed,
did it not happen
when we were rescued
and survived unexpectedly,
to live again?
Today I ask,
how am I to paint
the landscape of my soul
and inscribe the pattern
of love and letting go?

What time is it in the Universe?

old-man-2803645_1920.jpg

We live in a time, a developmental time.
No longer confined to linear time,
our future evolves, day after day,
as we step aside
from a world no longer static and stuck.

The grandfather clock,
resting stately on the wall
no longer determines where we are.
Now is the time to wonder,
What time is it in the Universe?

Pay Attention

new-years-day-5459162_1920.jpg

Pay attention to the flowers
Pay attention to the bees
Watch how they pray
Watch your soul
Notice the cosmos
Notice water and trees
Pay attention my friend
Fall upon your knees
Let your body pray
Yes, pay attention dear friend
Let your body pray.

Waiting

church-2658741_1920.jpg

We remember the day the child was born.
Holy mystery filled the air.
Suddenly there was no distance,
no twoness.
Christmas happened.
Divinity descended on Earth.
Everything is holy.
Nothing lies beyond
the divine embrace.

Winter Solstice

christmas-tree-5757876_1920.jpg

The days are short.
Christmas is near.
Tonight we await Christ’s arrival,
yet also know he is already near.

While the virus flourishes
and leadership fails,
we settle down and await
a new day.

Ode to Unraveling

coronavirus-4991979_1920.jpg

The world is unraveling
as the virus sweeps across the land.
People are dying
in seemingly insurmountable ways.
Meister Eckhart wrote, “Unless you let go, you cannot re-enter.”
Now, at the crossroads of pandemic and death,
we are called to take up the challenge,
to practice the protocols
and believe there are better days ahead.
This too will pass.
Yes, this too will pass.

The Edge of Longing

advent-1883840_1920.jpg

We have arrived at a special moment on our journey: the beginning of the season of Advent. It is a time for waiting, for longing; a time of great expectation.
We anticipate what is not yet but will still come to be.
At this time of great cosmic longing, we remember and give thanks for the great unfolding.
It is a time when oceans of incarnational energy light up the skies with the longing of supernovas, galaxies, and stars.
During this Advent season, we join our hearts and minds to once again recall the long-awaited historical moment when the Christ Child was born of Mary in the manger of Bethlehem.
May this sacred waiting—the holy mystery—flow into our awareness with cosmic wonder.
We gather, celebrate, and pay attention to the great historical, cosmic moment when Jesus Christ visited us here, on this sacred earth.

Thanksgiving 2020

woman-3918661_1920.jpg

Caregivers continue their heroic work to heal those afflicted and to reduce the loss of life.

Meanwhile, the believing community pours out prayers to our loving God in search of healing and relief from what is now a planetary pandemic unequaled in the last 100 years.

At this defining moment, we consult the prophets of yesterday and today as we search for wisdom and a response.

Thomas Berry reminds us that this morning in the night sky, as the earth turns eastward, humans and all creatures face the glory of a transforming dawn, and in the evening, bow to the mysteries of night. Inspired by these words, we search for beauty in our brokenness.

Vastness of the Night

prayer-candles-3792720_1920.jpg

The virus thrives
and people across the nation seek
protection and to survive
as political unrest divides our sacred land.

Yet in the hearts of many,
a gentle grace appears,
recognition flows,
communion happens.

A festival of lights
illuminates the world
as every remaining shadow
dissolves in the vastness of the night.

Sign of the Times

evolution-3871223_1920.jpg

Take courage, dear friends,
we are at the edge of new beginnings,
a deeply felt awareness.
Evolution is a sign of the times.

The divine spirit speak to us,
revealing the gospel of life
that continues to rise and fall,
rise and fall again.

At this new instant,
let your spirit speak
now and once again.
Evolution is a sign of the times.

Through the future,
one could say today,
evolution is alive.
Evolution is us.

Prayer for the World

124353786_10157392464157714_2945827830046110659_o.jpg

What can I say to the world,
blinded by light,
shining to illuminate the darkness,
the darkness of my soul?

Is this not a joyful moment?
Joe Bidden is now our president.
He knows well heartbreak and loss.
Today he invites us to gather and heal,
to knit together our unraveled sleeve of care.

Today we blossom forth
with Kamala as our companion,
as together we pray,
may we be holy, make us one again.

Let hope and gratitude flourish
as we return to the land of beauty
and pray the words of JFK:
“Ask not what your country can do for you,
ask what you can do for country.”

Yes, dear God, make us one again.

Just Pray

bird-4849604_1920.jpg

Holy mystery,
breath of all,
be with us now.
Just pray.

Be with all that is.
Pray with your life.
Depend on it.
Feel the heart beat

Experience God.
Awaken, feel this present moment.
There is nothing else to do,
just pray.

You are on your way to God.
Fall in love with life.
Just pray.
Yes, just pray.

Patience

You don’t have to run after it.
It was there all the time.
All you have to do is wait.
Yes, creator God,
it was there all the time.
Patience is everything.

Fragile Hope

woman-571715_1920.jpg

There is a hope in my heart that wants to live,
an enduring promise for which I struggle and strive.

May each day be filled with hope
as I reach out to friend and foe alike.

See beyond your shattered dreams and dare to hope again.
May this fragile moment be filled with promise.
